  • Thanks to Sam Levine and others for organizing this memorial award. In addition to being a fine scholar, Fred Zacharias was one of the most decent, honest people I have known. As it happened, Sam gave a talk at our school, and afterwards he and I and Fred had dinner the night before Fred was diagnosed with cancer. Less than a year later he was gone. It’s still a bit hard to comprehend, but I think it’s wonderful that Fred will be remembered in this way.
